Asthma

allergic rhinitis servicesAsthma affects over 17 million Americans. It causes chronic inflammation of the lungs which is exhibited by difficulty breathing, coughing, wheezing, chest pain and tightness. It can occur at any age but more commonly in childhood. There are various triggers for asthma including allergies, exposure to cigarette smoke, change in environmental temperature or exercise. Asthma can be treated and with appropriate management, an asthmatic should be able to take part in normal activities including sports.

Spirometry is a test used to determine how well your lungs are functioning and what type of lung disease may be causing your symptoms. It involves blowing into a device that measures the amount of air that you breathe out and the speed at which you can exhale. We use this test to assess the severity of asthma, monitoring control and in achieving treatment goals

Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis (sinus problems, hay fever) affects 35 million Americans. It is caused by contact with allergens such as pollen, dust, mold or animal dander. The lining of the nose and sinuses becomes inflamed leading to symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy nose and throat and post nasal drainage. The eyes can also be similarly affected causing watery, itchy, red eyes. Symptoms may be seasonal or occur year round.

Allergy testing can confirm which allergens are triggers. Allergy skin testing involves pricking the skin using a plastic lancet dipped in liquid allergen. After a 15 minute wait, any swelling seen at the prick site is compared to a control to see if the reaction is significant. No needles are used and the test is safe and not painful. Identifying and avoiding allergens which trigger asthma or allergy symptoms are the first steps towards achieving control of these chronic diseases.

Allergy shots or Immunotherapy injections
Besides taking medication some people may also need “allergy shots” to control their symptoms. When given over a period of time allergy shots reduce the body’s sensitivity to allergens so that the individual has fewer symptoms even if exposed. Allergy shots are given in our clinic Monday through Friday during regular clinic hours. We do our best to work around your schedule or your child’s schedule. Our aim is for you to miss as little time possible from school or from work.
